BLUE DOT FESTIVAL 2018
Bluedot Festival is an annual Music and Science festival that unites science, technology, art and culture to celebrate our Blue Planet.
Bluman Associates have been creating breathtaking visual experiences on the mighty Jodrell Telescope since 2011. This year, the team collaborated with several high profile artists to push the boundaries of interactivity. This was made possible by real-time generative content and the 3D modeling of the telescope, which allowed for precision projection mapping onto the complicated structure.
Mega Structure by Marcus Lyall
Well known for his work with The Chemical Brothers, Marcus Lyall created an interactive projection experience for this year’s Bluedot Festival.
Tabby’s star, an unusual cosmic object that omits abnormal radio signals/frequencies inspired the installation. It’s been theorised that these signals come from an alien mega structure floating in space, causing the unusual frequencies to be detected from Earth. Mega Structure was a conceptual ‘transmitter’ the audience could interact with to manipulate light signals and send them back into Space.
Participants could stand on a small stage in front of the Jodrell telescope. A plinth was located in the centre with a leap motion detector – allowing people to make hand gestures to create their own set of signals, which were translated into projected patterns and variations to the ambient sound scape.
COSMOS with Addie Wagenknecht
Curated by Abandon Normal Devices, COSMOS is an art-science commission that explores Deep Space. Wagenknect collaborated with Jodrell Bank astrophysicists’ through a series of residencies spending time at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. The resulting installation explored the notion that information was always available and it was up to the observer to look at it. Collaborating with Bluman Associates to create the large-scale projections, the Lovell telescope was transformed into a seemingly random data hub.
The Flaming Lips, Halle Orchestra, Future Islands and Chemical Brothers
Each headline artist of the 4-day event chose to incorporate projections onto the Lovell Telescope, as part of their performance. Bluman Associates facilitated each artist’s individual needs from content creation to technical translation and projection mapping.
