Bluman Associates were approached to create a content package for Emeli Sandés latest tour ‘Real Life’ that had to be incredibly flexible in both control and delivery.
Utilising the realtime graphics engine ‘Notch’ Bluman, designed and curated twenty-one individual looks, for either specific songs such as ‘Hurt’ or ‘Sparrow’ or for a section of the performance, like ‘Suitcase, River and Architect’.
Communicating with the band and Emeli, Bluman received a number of invaluable references for the development of the content, ranging from a fiery Spanish soul motif to a dark smokey classic jazz club.
Due to the real-time capabilities of Notch, Bluman was able to push out a massive amount of content very quickly, not being restricted by intricate keyframing or massive render times, as the final purpose was for live, real-time control during the show via the lighting designer/operator. The Notch Block was run inside a Disguise Solo media server allowing the LD to control Notch over Artnet, this created an incredibly streamlined on-site production/set-up due to the “plug and play” flexibility to the system.
During the tour, Bluman was given some feedback on how the Touring team felt about the content and suggested some very minor edits such as exposure or general pace of the scene, this is where Notch really shone and within an hour the Touring crew had their updated Notch Block ready to drop into the server, not only was this an insanely quick turnaround for last-minute edits but the Notch Blocks themselves were so small it avoided all issues of downloading massive files on unreliable networks and just provided a much smoother experience for the whole team involved.
